Over 40 Years of Safety Innovation —
The Original Slip-Resistant Shoe

Protecting The Workforce Since 1984

Shoes For Crews® is a leading designer and manufacturer of slip-resistant footwear, protecting millions of workers worldwide. Headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, Shoes For Crews began producing slip-resistant footwear in 1984 with a mission to create a safer workplace. Shoes For Crews’ mission is to protect workers and help employers reduce workers’ compensation costs. Trusted by over 150,000 companies worldwide, we are the industry leader in slip-resistant safety footwear.

Why Our Slip-Resistant Outsoles Are Superior

Our outsoles are specifically customized to support a wide range of safety challenges that workers in different environments face. We use advanced CnC mold-making, which is a unique cleaning process, and perform regular mold maintenance to ensure the integrity of our molds. Our molds get replaced more frequently than industry standards to ensure the shape and depth of the lugs remain consistent for optimal slip-resistant performance.

Shoes For Crews Hypergrip outsole

GLADIATOR™

The chevron lug design of our GLADIATOR tread design expands slip resistance to the most rugged areas. First, we retain the sharp leading edges of the lugs so that when you walk on a hard, flat surface, you still get traction. Second, the lugs are very widely spaced to overgrip physical debris and find balance on uneven surfaces. Finally, the wide shallow channels between the lugs mean that dirt and dried mud will naturally fall out, keeping the tread ready for the next step.

Easy Clean

The lug patterns of our Easy Clean outsoles improve on Hypergrip in three ways. First, the sharp leading edges of the lugs have more leading edges so the lugs will always resist slip in any direction. Second, the channels between the lugs are no longer straight; this helps prevent food or other debris from clogging the outsole. Finally, the lugs are wider and shallower to help the outsole self-clean.

Shoes For Crews Hypergrip outsole

Hypergrip

The square lug design of our Hypergrip outsole design has been proven and tested for decades. The goal in any slip-resistant outsole is to maximize rubber to floor, and this design is built to do that in lug design and lug spacing. First, the leading edges of the lugs are sharp angles. This means the lug scrapes contamination off the floor and creates contact. Second, the face of the square lugs is subdivided into micro-squares. Finally, the lugs are widely spaced to help debris fall out of the sole and not get stuck.

Slip Resistance

SFC is the leader in slip-resistant technology and has shown continuous leadership since our founding in 1984. This leadership position is a result of SFC's expertise in forward-thinking design, technology improvements and processes.

The Details

Lug Design: Why It's Hip to be Square

Shoes For Crews accomplishes slip resistance in multiple ways—through our proprietary mold-making processes, various lug patterns and compound technologies. We use sharp, square corners on our lugs which act like "squeegees" to continually push away debris with every step. Our outsole molds are expertly machined and maintained using a proprietary process that guarantees the continued integrity of these sharp corners.

Channel Design: Clean Soles Are A Good Thing

Tread pattern designs vary differently based on end-use applications and environments. Our Easy Clean and GLADIATOR tread designs are designed with wider, more flexible channels, which help to more naturally release debris from the outsole.

4-Season Grip™ Compound

SFC is constantly trying to solve for unmet needs in workplace safety, and maintaining grip on cold and icy surfaces is one. SFC’s 4SG™ compound was engineered to retain grip on ice, as well as wet surfaces. This innovative compound is free of sharp elements, making it a perfect solution for both indoor and outdoor use, and eliminating the need for ice cleats. The rubber outsole won't scratch or damage floors and so it allows wearers the convenience of not having to change footwear every time they move from indoors to outdoors. Our proprietary processes are what differentiate us in the marketplace.

4HD™ Compound: Durability Against Abrasion

4HD outsole compound stands for “high durability.” Slip resistance isn’t just about a “grippy” tread design; it’s also accomplished through how the rubber outsole is manufactured. The 4HD compound is built to withstand extensive exposure to abrasive elements such as extremely gritty flooring, machine shop shavings, grated metal surfaces, as well as petroleum products such as oil and gas.

Process Leads to Performance

Our proprietary processes are what differentiate us from the marketplace. We test every mold during every production run and on every size, ensuring that the integrity of our unique, slip-resistant tread designs remain intact. If we see a change in shape or a drop in performance, we recycle the mold metal and carve a new one.

Water Resistance

SFC offers a wide selection of waterproof and water-resistant shoes and boots. This includes athletic styles with treated textile uppers, full-grain leather dress shoes, industrial boots and pull-on PU wellington styles. Based on your job's particular exposure to the elements, we've got what you need to keep you protected.

The Details

Liquid Resistance: Protect Yourself from Exposure

If your job puts you in frequent contact with water or other liquids and chemicals, SFC has a line of protective footwear for your needs. We offer four versions of liquid-resistant protection: Injection-Molded PVC, Polyurethane, EVA and Vulcanized Rubber/Neoprene. Each has specific qualities of protection so, before you purchase, make sure to research carefully what your exposure is so you can choose what liquid-resistant material you need.

Waterproof: Keep Your Feet Dry in Wet Conditions

Making waterproof footwear is more than just adding a waterproof lining to an existing boot. It entails using waterproof materials such as non-wicking threads and laces. We build the waterproof protection from the inside out. Our interior linings absorb and wick perspiration away from your foot to keep you comfortable and dry.

Water Resistant: A Mixed Forecast Ahead

Water-resistant shoes have all the upper materials of our waterproof boots, but not the waterproof internal bootie. When the weatherman calls for rain and you've got a meeting you're dressed up for, don't fret—pull on a pair of SFC water-resistant dress styles. Water-resistant uppers mean that the shoe will bead away water from the surface when exposed to brief periods of rain, splashes and puddles, but water-resistant styles are not recommended for continuous immersion.

SPILL GUARD™: Say No To Wet Toes

The most common part of a shoe to come into contact with spilled liquids is the toe area. SPILL GUARD™ adds additional protection in just that area with either a membrane, backer, or treatment. This allows for breathability in the rest of the shoe, maximizing comfort and also reducing cost.

The Process of Material Tracing

Every shoe we make has its own "bill of materials" that traces when, where and how the shoe was made. This allows for enhanced control over the materials and the vendors we source them from, so we can ensure quality and consistency for each production run. It also helps us respond to and mitigate production problems faster.

Safety Toe Protection

Safety toe protection is serious business. SFC understands the nuances of each safety toe type and even developed our own proprietary Nanotube Carbon Fiber Toe. We build industrial styles with a variety of toe types since end use, and personal preference, vary.

The Details

NCT: Nanotube Carbon Fiber Safety Toe

Nanotube Carbon Fibers (a.k.a. NCT) are thinner than the fibers used in standard composite toes. This means they pack tighter and allow for a slimmer profile, but they still provide the same protection. They are also less than half the weight of steel toes. They're non metallic so they won't magnetize, and they have slower heat transfer so they are a good choice when working in cold environments.

CT: Composite Toe

Composite fiberglass safety toes have been around for over 20 years. They are less than half the weight of steel toes. They're non metallic so they won't magnetize, and they have slower heat transfer so they are a good choice when working in cold environments.

AT: Aluminum Alloy Toe

Aluminum safety toes, also called "alloy toes," are made from an aluminum alloy. They're about half the weight of steel toes and are more difficult to magnetize.

ST: Steel Toe

Steel safety toes are the tried-and-true original safety toe material. They weigh more than composite and alloy safety toes, but they are the most economical and some workers actually prefer the weight of them.

The Process of Standardized Testing

All safety toe footwear must pass standard tests such as ASTM F2413-18 for US and CSA-Z195-4 for Canada.

How SFC Defines Comfort

Comfort is, of course, relative, but SFC refers to it as a mix between how much energy the compound absorbs as well as how much it returns. Too little absorption can feel like you are walking in bare feet on concrete while too much return can feel too bouncy and your stride can become unsteady. SFC offers a range of midsole compounds to help you find one that suits your stride.

The Details

REVIVE™ Ultra: Light on Weight, Heavy on Comfort

SFC’s proprietary REVIVE™ Ultra cushioning foam is engineered with pressurized Nitrogen to reduce weight, maintain structure, increase impact absorption and provide energy return.

REVIVE™: Stand and Walk In Comfort

SFC's original REVIVE™ cushioning foam outperforms standard EVA midsoles by offering 10% more energy return. This means it's "bouncier" but it won't make you feel unsteady on your feet. It offers a balanced mix of support and comfort for a long day of standing and walking.

EVA: The Standard In Midsole Comfort

EVA is the standard compound used for midsoles, and it's found in many mass-market shoes. It is lightweight, offers energy return and absorption. It's a multi-use material that works for a long day of both walking and standing.

Insoles

Insoles are where the bottom of the foot interacts with the shoe, and the bottom of the foot is where we perspire. Our insoles are made of polyurethane, (a.k.a. PU). PU is resilient and absorbs shock while returning energy, adding additional comfort, and we use insole linings that help to resist odor. Some of our shoes have removable insoles that not only will dry faster but also allow for custom orthotics.

Process: Testing For Midsole Durability

Our midsole materials are subjected to a battery of tests that cover everything from bounce to durability to color fastness. Shoes need to look good and be comfortable right out of the box, but we also want them to stay that way day in and day out.

When Style Meets Function

Just like at any job, the right tools and gear make tasks easier. In footwear, think of the upper material (e.g. textile, leather, rubber) a tool as well. Different materials offer various levels of safety, breathability, flexibility, water resistance, and ease of cleaning. The totality of all materials determines the cost of the footwear, so it's important to know why a certain shoe costs more, or less. Make sure you're informed about all the safety features of the materials so you understand what tools your footwear can offer.

The Details

The Lasting Qualities of Leather

Everyone loves, and should have, a genuine, full-grain leather shoe. If your job calls for leather every day or even just sometimes, you can still find leather that is built for work. Genuine leather stands up to wear and tear very well. With a moderate amount of care, it will likely be the last thing that gives out on the shoe. Leather is naturally breathable and moisture wicking, and it will break in and stretch to customize your fit over time.

Easy Clean Leather

Easy Clean leather, sometimes called "action leather", starts with a base of genuine leather suede and then permanently bonds it to an exterior polyurethane coating. This makes for a very easy-to-clean material that still allows for some moisture absorption and breathability, which is more typically found with full-grain leather. More commonly used in athletic styles, Easy Clean "action" leather wears well and keeps a consistent color.

Synthetics Are A Good Thing

Fully-synthetic materials might get a bad rap, but there's a lot of upside too. They offer more natural stain resistance than textiles and leathers and, while they lack the natural moisture absorbtion of leather-based uppers, the trade off is that they dry very quickly and hold their original shape very well over time.

Textile

Textile-based uppers provide the most flexibility and breathability. However, whether it's a knit or a woven, the nature of the material is more difficult to clean and more likely to stain. We offer some styles where the textile is protected by a synthetic shell. It's important to be mindful of a shoe's end use and choose the materials that will stand up to that environment.

Process: Testing for Upper Durability

Every material we use in our uppers goes through a series of mechanical durability tests. We test for tear strength, abrasion resistance and chemical resistance to common cleaning agents. We also test for general "livability" factors such as colorfastness and breathability. Durability is not just a function of the outsole. Shoes need to look appropriate on the job hour after hour, day after day, no matter how rough it gets.
