What is considered a slip-resistant shoe?
Look for shoes that have been tested for Slip Resistance by a third party certification. This certification differs depending on the region you are living in. For the United States and Canada, Slip Resistance for footwear is determined by testing the shoe in a SATRA test methodology that tests both the heel strike and toe off portions of the stride. Required testing is dry quarry tile, wet quarry tile, and just added oily/wet quarry tile. Shoes that demonstrate a .40 coefficient of friction can then say that they have passed testing under ASTM F-2913. Some brands, like Shoes For Crews, also test on more extreme contaminants like grease, and demonstrate a .40 coefficient of friction above and beyond the scope of ASTM testing.
Is anti-slip the same as non-slip?
While both refer to footwear built to resist slipping, slip-resistant is the more proper term. When the shoes are tested, they are tested for how much they resist slipping, not reviewed on how many 'anti-slip' features they have. Given various conditions and the vagaries of human behavior, it is impossible to state that any shoe is fully non-slip. Given the right combination of floor type, contamination type, and human behavior (overloaded, running), any slip-resistant shoe may still be involved in a slip and fall event.
Why is it important to wear slip-resistant shoes?
According to industry estimates, approximately $70B in medical bills and workers' compensation is due to slips and falls. This is why it is important to look for shoes that have been tested for Slip Resistance by a third party certification. This certification differs depending on the region you are living in.
